Lady Vols’ Fifth-Inning Surge Downs No. 10 Nebraska

Michael Allen February 13, 2026

SEO Meta Description: Tennessee softball used dominant pitching and a decisive fifth inning to beat No. 10 Nebraska 4–1 in Clearwater, improving to 2–0 vs. top-10 teams.

Tennessee softball continued its strong start to the season with a 4–1 victory over No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers softball on Friday in Clearwater, marking the Lady Vols’ second win over a top-10 opponent this young season.

The game opened as a pitcher’s duel. Gabby Leach sparked the Lady Vols in the top of the first with a one-out single, but Jordy Frahm worked out of trouble. Tennessee starter Sage Mardjetko navigated an early leadoff walk in the bottom half before settling in, and both pitchers traded scoreless frames through three innings.

Nebraska broke through first in the third. After a leadoff walk and a single put two aboard, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Mardjetko then issued a hit batter to load the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly to center plated the game’s first run, though Tennessee limited the damage to keep it 1–0.

Tennessee answered in the fourth. With two outs, Ella Dodge roped a double to left-center, then scored when Mackenzie Butt’s blooper glanced off the shortstop’s glove to even the score at 1–1. The Lady Vols turned to Erin Nuwer in the circle, and she delivered a dominant frame, striking out the side aside from a two-out walk.

The decisive moment came in the fifth. Maddi Rutan led off with a single, and Emma Clarke was hit by a pitch to put immediate pressure on Frahm. After a pop-up bunt for the first out, Leach delivered the blow—a two-run double to left-center that swung the game in Tennessee’s favor, 3–1. A single by Elsa Morrison chased Frahm, and a wild pitch by reliever Alexis Jensen allowed an insurance run to score for a 4–1 lead.

From there, Tennessee’s bullpen locked it down. Karlyn Pickens cruised through the fifth, worked around two walks in the sixth, and then closed the door in the seventh with a lineout followed by back-to-back strikeouts. Tennessee threatened again in the top of the seventh, loading the bases, but the three-run cushion proved more than enough.

With the win, Tennessee remains undefeated and continues to build momentum early in the season. The Lady Vols are back in action later today against James Madison Dukes softball at 5 p.m. ET as they look to keep the streak rolling.
