Vols Roll Past New Mexico State but Miss Chances in 42–9 Win

SEO Meta Description:
Tennessee beats New Mexico State 42–9 behind a strong run game and stout defense, though miscues leave room for improvement ahead of Florida matchup.

Tennessee handled its business Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium, rolling past New Mexico State 42–9 while debuting this year’s edition of the Smokey Grey uniforms. The Vols dominated nearly every phase of the game, but a handful of missed opportunities—and two interceptions from quarterback Joey Aguilar—left a sense that the margin could have been even wider.

Even so, Tennessee showed noticeable improvement across the board. The run game came alive for the first time since the Alabama matchup, the receivers delivered another sharp performance, and both the offensive and defensive lines turned in encouraging outings. Despite being shorthanded, the defense stifled the Aggies’ ground attack, limited explosive plays, and forced multiple turnovers.

First Quarter: Fast Start and Defensive Toughness

New Mexico State opened with a pair of first downs before Tennessee’s defense tightened, forcing a punt. The Vols then moved the ball effectively until Aguilar threw his first interception of the day. But Tennessee’s defense responded immediately, stuffing the Aggies on 4th-and-1 at the Vols’ 41-yard line.

It took just four plays for Tennessee to cash in, highlighted by a 45-yard Aguilar strike to Chris Brazzell. DeSean Bishop punched it in from the one to put the Vols ahead 7–0.

On the next Aggie drive, Ty Redmond made one of the plays of the game with a spectacular one-handed interception. Four plays later, Aguilar kept it himself for a 27-yard touchdown run. Tennessee ended the quarter up 14–0.

Second Quarter: Long Drive and Missed Chances

Pinned at their own one-yard line to open the quarter, the Vols marched 99 yards in 13 plays, capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass from Aguilar to Braylon Staley. Tennessee led 21–0 and appeared to be in full control.

New Mexico State managed a field goal late in the half after Aguilar’s second interception, but neither team generated much offensive momentum before the break. The Vols took a 21–3 lead into halftime.

Third Quarter: Vols Put the Game Away

Tennessee began the second half with another methodical touchdown drive, this time finished by Star Thomas on a 21-yard scoring run. After the defense forced another turnover on downs, the Vols struck again—Peyton Lewis powering in from the one-yard line.

Moments later, Bryson Eason tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage, and William Wright snagged it and returned it for a pick-six, pushing Tennessee’s lead to 42–3. The quarter ended with New Mexico State driving but still facing a fourth-and-one.

Fourth Quarter: Vols Close It Out

The Aggies opened the final frame by converting and driving to Tennessee’s four-yard line before turning the ball over on downs yet again. Aguilar added a short completion to extend his streak of 200-yard passing games before giving way to backup Jake Merklinger. Freshman George MacIntyre later closed out the final snaps.

New Mexico State added a late touchdown but missed the extra point, ending the afternoon with a 42–9 final.

  • Star Thomas: 5 carries, 30 yards, 1 TD

Tennessee now turns its attention to a pivotal rivalry matchup next Saturday. The Vols travel to Gainesville to take on Florida at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC in what promises to be a defining late-season test not just for this season, but for the future of Tennessee football under Josh Heupel.
