Meta Description: Alabama play by play announcer Chris Stewart says that Tennessee pipes in crowd noise to go along with the 100,000 plus fans in Neyland Stadium
The SEC has some of the loudest stadiums in the nation with 9 of the 16 schools boasting crowds of over 80,000. That alone is enough to make for a loud environment, but when you add the raw emotion and passion of those 80,000 fans to that stadium, it makes it almost impossible for opposing teams to compete. That’s why home field advantage is such a big factor in these conference matchups.
Neyland Stadium is among the top of not only the SEC, but the entire country when it comes to stadium size and crowd noise. If you have ever been to a game on Rocky Top, you know that the 100,000 plus screaming fans in attendance will give any team that visits them a hard time on the field. Brady Quinn made this comment about playing in Neyland Stadium: “I swear to God the ball was moving, it was so loud,” said Quinn. “It felt like I had speakers right behind my left and right ears blaring. If I go hard of hearing, I might be suing the University of Tennessee.” Baker Mayfield also said this: “When we went to play Tennessee in Neyland Stadium, that was probably the best game experience I’ve had and probably will ever have. That’s a different type of loud. I can’t even describe it. It was unbelievable.”
During the game on Saturday, Alabama play by play man Chris Stewart took things a step further. With Alabama facing a 2nd and 16, Tennessee fans were getting really loud like they had been for most of the night. Stewart proceeds to make this statement on the air:
That’s quite the accusation to make when you are live on the air with no proof of the accusation. Not to mention that it is illegal to pipe in crowd noise through the stadium in the SEC. Tennessee fans are some of the loudest in the nation, and when things start going their way it’s hard for whoever the opposing team is to get things going. When that opposing team is the Crimson Tide of Alabama, there is always something extra that the fans save when the ball is kicked off to start the game.
While most of the reactions have been negative towards Stewart wondering why he would say such a thing, the Tennessee athletics X account decided to have some fun with the accusation.
Meanwhile other people are backing the Vols as they talk about how great the environment is in Neyland.
The most notable name is former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy who says “Having played here 3 times… this place is absolutely bonkers. It is so loud. So difficult to communicate.” McElroy played at a time where Tennessee was down, and the environment was still insane because that’s how passionate Vol fans are.
Alabama had a lot of struggles on Saturday night in Neyland as was evident by the amount of pre snap penalties that they had in the game. Tennessee fans should feel good knowing that they cause so much chaos that people think all that noise is artificial.
